We want to say a big thank you to Angela Harvey-Bowen and wish her well as she tackles a new set of responsibilities as the Deputy Chief of Professional Learning at Friendship Public Charter Schools, one of NAATE’s partner school organizations. Angela has worked relentlessly for three years in our efforts to recruit and support the best teachers in high need schools, and she has facilitated a number of cases during program sessions. NAATE Teacher Fellows think of Angela when they think of NAATE. We are fortunate to have Angela remaining on our faculty for future NAATE program sessions.
It has been my absolute pleasure learning from you and growing alongside you during the past five years. I continue to be humbled by the compassion and genuine desire with which you teach and lead and by your sincere aspirations for better educational opportunities, especially for the children who need them most. Thank you for sharing insights that have impacted the lives and practice of your peers and of NAATE’s instructional faculty. Thank you for being vulnerable and turning a mirror onto yourselves to increase the impact of the work you do. Most of all, thank you for being open to innovative ideas and approaches to disrupting systemic inequities that persist in our society. As the ineffable James Baldwin said: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Your commitment to facing the real and urgent challenges that plague our educational system have moved me in ways untold. As I leave my post at NAATE, I take solace in knowing that I am continuing my own journey of learning, if from another perspective. As I move on, I will always contemplate the many things I have learned from you.
